The Greens are saddened to share the loss of our dear friend and Victorian Greens MP for Brunswick, Dr Tim Read. A State Memorial Service will be held at Melbourne Town Hall on 28 October.

What we’re fighting for

We have a broken political system. But the Greens have a plan to fix it.

We’ll make life affordable and put people before corporate profit. We will get money out of politics and bring costs down. We’ll protect our environment and tackle the climate crisis.

We’ll do it all by making big corporations pay their fair share.

There’s never been a more important time to act on your values: if you believe in this too, join us.

  • Bring costs down

    • Make public transport permanently free, frequent and accessible
    • Expand our public dental system so everyone can see the dentist for free
    • Ensure everyone can afford groceries with publicly-owned supermarkets
  • Make housing affordable

    • Freeze and cap rents so they never rise more than wages
    • Stop the demolition of public housing and build 80,000 new public homes
    • Cut stamp duty to bring down the cost of buying a home
  • Money out of politics

    • Ban corporate donations to politicians
    • Stop the sale of public assets to private corporations
    • Make the big banks, gambling, fossil fuel and property industries pay their fair share in tax
  • Protect nature, end coal & gas

    • Lower bills by replacing coal and gas with publicly-owned renewable energy
    • Ban gas drilling in Victoria’s oceans & end native forest logging
    • Invest in protection for wildlife and nature

How we win

The Greens don’t take corporate donations and we will never be bought by billionaires and lobbyists. We fight back against the cashed up major parties and their massive advertising war chests with people power. We win when thousands of people come together to get organised. We need to build a mass movement to take our democracy back from vested corporate interests. Together we are powerful!

Get organised

There are so many ways to be part of making change, we welcome people of all skills and backgrounds. There's something for everyone, there’s training and support to get you involved.

Door knocking

Face to face conversations beats an AI slop ad anyday. One on one conversations are the most effective way to persuade our community and get the message out.

Signs

People won’t vote for what they can’t see. Putting up a sign helps get our message out and connect our candidates with the community.

Our Wins

Our Victorian MPs have achieved so much over the last 8 years — here’s a few of our wins:

  • Stronger energy efficiency standards in rentals starting 2027 such as heating, cooling and ceiling insulation. Landlords will be required to replace broken old heaters and air conditioners with new energy efficient ones.
  • Together with First Nations, environmental and community groups, the Greens achieved an end to commercial native forest logging on public land, and continue to fight to close the loopholes.
  • The transition to gas-free new homes.
  • Fought and stopped new gas project approvals in the Otways — and will continue to fight as new ones arise.
  • Took action on MP integrity, where ministerial diaries are forced to be published so we know who politicians are meeting with — no more dodgy backdoor deals.
  • Ended dump day — the government’s practice of releasing a flood of annual reports all at once, making it nearly impossible for journalists or others to properly scrutinise them.
  • Stronger protections for renters, better conditions for rental properties, and eliminating unfair fees and rental bidding practices, including:
    • The banning of no-grounds evictions for renters.
    • The banning of rental bidding and third-party fees when applying for a rental.
    • A crackdown on short-stay accommodation and vacant properties to get more homes on the market for people to live in.
    • From next year, heating and cooling will be mandatory in new rentals (and all rentals by 2031).
